THE NETHERLANDS
Dutch
Staatloosheid
“Statelessness.”
Nationaliteit onbekend
“Nationality unknown.”
An important distinction
The contributor, writing from the perspective of a community of lawyers and legal academics, distinguishes between the two concepts.
They explain that staatloosheid is established under Dutch law, while nationaliteit onbekend is an administrative categorisation used when a person's nationality cannot be established. Someone recorded as having “nationality unknown” may be stateless, but may alternatively have a nationality that cannot be determined.
For the contributor, neither concept adequately represents the person's wider lived experience. Instead, both demonstrate the centrality of proof, official documentation, registration and law. Questions of belonging, individual experience and rights are less directly visible in the terminology.
